We have a winner!

Have you heard the news? The ARBA Convention in Del Mar, CA entry numbers are a record for a Convention on the west coast--13,035 animals! The numbers for each breed/class are now posted and I can make the big announcement--the winner of guess the entry number contest!

It was interesting to see how many Fuzzies you all thought would be at the show. The total numbers (open and youth combined) for the guesses ranged from 119 to 971. The actual Fuzzy Lop entry numbers for the 2009 Convention are 247 in open and 56 in youth for a total of 303 rabbits. Most people made individual guesses for open and youth and Tausha Tucker gets an honorable mention for guessing 250 in open but she was off by almost 50 rabbits in her youth guess. (Close Tausha but "no cigar").

Drumroll please......and the winner is Ginger Mendat who guessed 314 total rabbits. Ginger can't make it to California for convention this year (we will miss you so much!) so I will mail her the prize. You have to wait until after Convention though because I am going to pick up a nice Convention item while I am there.

Hope you all had fun with the contest. Now go out and groom your Fuzzies.

Make a guess

Convention entries are still open for additions. So you have time to put more charges on your credit card and enter just one or two or.....more Fuzzy Lops. How many Fuzzies do you predict will be entered in the ARBA Convention in Del Mar? Leave a comment or send an email to me at hoploppitryatyahoodotcom (you know how to convert that email don't you? Read it and you will figure it out.). Leave your guess for the total number of open and youth American Fuzzy Lops by midnight tonight, October 12, for a chance to win a wonderful something at Convention. (Actually if you send the email to me before I wake up tomorrow morning that is soon enough! I won't be up at midnight making sure your email gets in under the wire.) This is not a joke--there will be a prize!

Happy News!

Who doesn't like a good love story? On June 13, 2009, Kelsey Huffman maried Tim Stover. Congratulations to Kelsey and Tim and Fuzzy Lop friends!

ps Does anyone think it is odd that we have a photo of Kelsey and her Fuzzy Lop rather than Kelsey and Tim? No? Neither do I!

In need of mittens

Last post, I told you how to make yarn from your Fuzzy Lop wool. Well this post should provide patterns for making mittens, hats, scarfs, and more to keep warm. Much of the country is unbelievable cold and snowy. Muriel K says a tree is down in her front yard and its COLD (she lives in Oregon where bad weather is generally held off by the Pacific Ocean.) Sherry C sends the photos in this post from Michigan. At least we expect winter weather in January in Michigan.

Below is a lovely coconut cake on a platter. No? Maybe you are right. That must be something else. Read on to see what Sherry has to say:

"The coconut cake on a stand is actually my taller birdbath about 15-18" standing on the ground. And the windchill is so low it could freeze a dog to a hydrant...-26 windchill yesterday! Needless to say the pet goose in in the garage and is so used to the trip through the kitchen she will walk it by herself...my escape cat dove out the open door today to chase a sparrow and when he hit the snow he literally flew back inside. Well, I should go down to the mailbox, but I'm having trouble motivating myself...those of you who have been here understand...those who have not my trip to the mailbox is a long walk! Keep warm and pray for us in MI to get some warmer air!"

All of us who live in the heat wave part of the country (its 70 deg in California today) are thinking of those of you who are in the new ice age. Stay inside (except when you have to feed and water animals), snuggle under the blankets and think warm thoughts.

Stuffed with animals

If you like animals, then Alaska is the place for you. Below is a musk ox. These are some odd looking critters. They are raised now in farms in Alaska. The musk ox are combed to collect the underwool which is spun into yarn that is softer than cashmere (and more expensive too).

We saw a bear who was busy eating berries. Alaska in the summer is bear paradise. Not only are there wild berries everywhere, the salmon fill the streams. I read that bears may catch and eat 8 or more salmon per hour!
Not to be outdone, the bays are full of animals too. This is a Stellar sea lion. While on a cruise of Prince William Sound we saw an area with more than 100 young males, just hanging out, sort of a fraternity house for sea lions.
Don't forget the whales. I saw a mother and her calf in Prince William Sound (mom's fluke is below). While Jim was kayaking, he had a whale come within 10 ft of his boat, then dive and swim underneath. In case, you don't realize, a humpback whale is more than 40 ft in length, and Jim is quite a bit shorter than that.
I love this shot of Prince William Sound from the salmon hatchery. There are so many gorgeous mountains and water views in Alaska!
Hope you enjoyed my summer vacation.

Not just waterfalls, but also ice

Maybe we didn't travel to somewhere warm. Check out the ice! I don't think Hawaii or Tahiti have glaciers that come down to the waters edge,

or huge ice flows in any of the bays.
Here is Jim G kayaking up to the edge of Columbia Glacier, the second largest tidewater glacier in...
Alaska! What a gorgeous place. We traveled about 900 mi over 8 days and saw just a tiny slice of the 49th state.
I didn't kayak (water, yuck), but loved the ferry ride through Prince William Sound from Valdez to Whittier.

What I Did on my Summer Vacation

One guess--where have I been for the past week? There are totem poles,

water falls running into rivers,
more water falls running into bays,
more water falls.
What do you think? Is it Hawaii? Tahiti? Definitely somewhere hot, right?

Where am I?

I'm not the most regular "blogger" and I'm sure you've noticed.  I try to put up at least one, sometimes two posts per week.  It probably doesn't make up for the infrequency of posts, but I actually think about it several times every week.

This is one time when I have a very good excuse for not posting this week.  I am on a trip and it doesn't have anything to do with Fuzzy Lops.  I am in the Dominican Republic, volunteering for a medical mission call Somos Amigos.  Today is travel day so I'm in a Marriott in Santiago that is more modern than many hotels in the US, but tomorrow will be a different story.  This is my second Somos Amigos trip and I am really excited to be here again.

This is a beautiful country, green and lush, surrounded by the oceans.  I can see the mountains from my hotel room.  Tomorrow the team will go into the mountains to start work.  As we flew into Santiago this morning, I remembered how the Dominicans all get a bit nervous about landing.  No wonder--the plane was bouncing in the air (I suspect those mountains have something to do with it).  Cricks and squeaks came from the plane which didn't make me terribly confident plus the pilot seemed to be coming in to land way to fast (OK, no I don't have my pilots license, but it seemed fast to me and I think I am a good judge of these things).  When we landed, the Dominicans burst into applause and cheers (even the flight attendants).  The religious, which is basically all of the Dominicans, made the sign of the cross at the same time.
Whew....we made it.

Check back next week for photos and the rest.

Black and white and slobbery all over

If there is one truth about those of us who are in the rabbit hobby, it's that we love all animals. Rabbits are just one among many. We have cats, or birds, or horses, or dogs.

Muriel K is no exception. She is getting a new puppy! He's a Boston Terrier. Name is yet to be determined but Ollie and Avery are in the running.

Look at these photos and just feel the puppy kisses!

Spring has sprung

Here in Northern California along the Delta, spring has definately arrived! Spring has always been one of our favorite times of the year. As for many, favorites include the flowers blooming or the rain showers, but I could guarantee any rabbit raisers answer would be, "Baby bunnies!" The mixture of excitement comes from breeding our does for Convention, our does nest building, the telling of the colors of our babies, and baby bunnies hopping out of nest boxes. The joy, love, and again excitement is a wonderful feeling.

Here in my rabbitry kits are falling out of boxes, showing pretty colors, and have attention wanting personalities. Head scratchings are musts for moms, for taking good care of their children who now try and nurse whenever they feel like it. For those not on litters, wire fills with colorful fluff and those with "beautiful coats" are beautiful until you touch, patches come off and I realize I don't have anything to really show at our spring shows.

But at least the babies are cute... here are a few pictures.

Thanks for the post from our guest blogger, Susie.

Whose Bright Idea was This?

That was a popular comment shared on an adventure which was headed for Perry, Georgia. Let me start from the beginning.

One friend called another and said, “I got an email and someone is selling out of fuzzies. I know you have wanted one of the bucks. What if we go down and get some bunnies?”

Friend Two says, “That’s a great idea. There is a show a few hours away from there. We can make a weekend of it and do both.”

Friend One, “Well, the catch is that we have to buy the whole herd.”

Friend Two, “Great, I will get the ear numbers from Seller and we can enter those bunnies too. That way we can get comments on them right away.”

Friend One, “What a great idea. There are two junior orange does, who is going to show which one?”

Friend Two, “I’ll take 18 and you take 20. They are litter mates so they should be about the same.”

Friend One, “Great idea.”

So now that you are caught up on how it started, let me share what happens next.

Friend One meets Friend Two at a Wendy’s off the highway. Friend One puts her 18 bunnies in the mini van with Friend Two’s 16 bunnies. Already packed were empty cages for the bunnies about to be purchased, feed, grooming supplies, water, chairs, and numerous suitcases along with one teenager. Off they went. Five hours later, they arrived at the rabbitry. Everything was unpacked, and 15 new bunnies were added to the caravan. Yes, you have calculated right. There are now 49 bunnies in the van along with numerous other bargains found at the closing rabbitry. You would think that would be funny enough except now Friend Two realizes that she does not have any empty holes at home to put these new bunnies in, and $75.00 for a 6 hole is such a steal.

Friend Two says, “If I back the van up to the rabbitry and use the steps, I think I can get the cages on top. Your husband gave me container of bungies. All I need is a big sheet of cardboard.”

(The cardboard is to lay down on the van so it won’t get scratched. You see, I forgot to mention that the van was just purchased 3 days before the trip. It would be hard to explain to the husband about how the scratches got up there!)

Friend One, a cardiac patient, says, “I can’t help you lift that!”

Continuing on, that is not a problem because father of Seller is more than happy to get that big stack of cages sold and finds the cardboard and helps strap it to the top. Away the van with three people, 49 bunnies, supplies, and a cage strapped to the top goes, head to the show!

Arriving to the show grounds late, there is only time to unload the van and feed the bunnies before things are locked up. The next morning, the friends get there first real look at what they have purchased and entered into the show. It goes something like this.

Friend One says, “I can’t show this doe, she has wool missing everywhere.”

Friend Two says, “Sure you can, just comb it over the bald spots.”

Friend One replies, “Every time I comb, I just make more bald spots. At this point, she doesn’t have any wool on her body or her head. Whose bright idea was this?”

Friend Two laughs, because she lucked into the good doe, and says, “It was yours!”

Needless to say there were lots of humorous comments from the judges and exhibitors that day. Finally the two friends head for the original Wendy’s where the husband of Friend One is waiting to meet us. One the way home, Friend One tells Friend Two that her husband is not aware that she has gone to purchase these extra bunnies. The story ends like this.

Friend Two says,”What are you going to tell him? Don’t you think he will notice that he is lifting more cages than he originally loaded?”

Friend One replies, “I was thinking he would be distracted by the huge cage strapped to the top of the van. While he is wondering how we got it up there, we would load the new bunnies into my van. As long as he knew he did not have to unload that big cage, he would be happy!”
What a weekend of WHOSE BRIGHT IDEA WAS THIS?

Let Me Outta Here

Why is it that some moms seem to want their babies around for an eternity, yet others seem to be desperately saying "HELP, LET ME OUT OF HERE!" after just 5 weeks?
We've all heard it, the silent screams of a frustrated mom saying "I've had ENOUGH!"
Sounds all too familiar, doesn't it? I suppose it really has nothing at all to do with how good a parent you are.

Human (and I guess bunny) nature is a funny thing. In bunnyland however, once they're gone....they're gone! In our world it's quite a different story! They're back, they're gone, they're back, they're gone. I guess we really wouldn't have it any other way. In our house we always said "If mom's happy, everybody's happy!" It worked for me!
